Growing up, Melissa has said she was not an overly chubby kid. In fact, she had been in great shape for a while. In an interview with Us Weekly, she disclosed, “I’ve been every size in the world. Parts of my twenties, I was in great shape, but I didn’t appreciate it. If I was a six or an eight, I thought, ‘Why aren’t I a two or a four?’” Unhealthy food choices and not exercising eventually led to her gaining weight.

When she got cast in Gilmore Girls as Sookie St. James, Melissa embarked on a radical, all-liquid diet that was supervised by a doctor. It made her lose 70 pounds in just four months, but she has since said she was never going to put herself through that again because she felt starved and half-crazy all the time.

A liquid diet is when you consume your calories through soups, juices, and shakes alone. It is said to be a fast way to lose weight by promoting cleansing and detoxing, while also easing bloat and helping with digestion.

Liquid diets can be beneficial when done right, and should be supervised by a doctor like Melissa was in order to get the nutrients you need. However, they often aren’t recommended as a long-term weight loss plan.

Melissa McCarthy’s Change of Plans for Weight Loss

A change of mindset about her weight and healthier lifestyle changes yielded better results. For the film Spy, Melissa trained with a martial arts expert for several hours in a day over two months and discovered she loved doing stunts.

The physical activity led to a weight loss of 50 pounds and feeling amazing enough to let go and stop worrying about her weight, calling it the best thing she’s ever done.

Melissa has since continued working out with a combination of strength-training and cardio and pairs her routine with a low-carb diet. She delegates her carb allowance to good carbs and also makes sure to include healthy fats and protein in her diet.

She drinks water with lemon and green tea to flush out toxins. Her routine also calls for a 7:30 p.m. bedtime which she follows religiously.

Knowing the struggles of plus-sized people everywhere, Melissa launched a clothing line called Melissa McCarthy Seven7 which is size-inclusive and includes blouses, jeans, and dresses in trendy designs for women to look and feel good in.

She is an inspiration to millions worldwide for speaking out about weight struggles and called out the practice of body shaming, saying, “We have to stop categorizing and judging women based on their bodies. We are teaching young girls to strive for unattainable perfection instead of feeling healthy and happy in their own skin.”

Melissa McCarthy’s weight loss experience speaks a lot about how mindset can make all the difference. People can be too critical of their own bodies because they want to conform to ideal standards, which are often dictated through clothing size numbers.
